IndiGo appoints William Walsh as Chief Executive Officer

The Board of InterGlobe Aviation Limited (IndiGo) has announced the appointment of William Walsh as the Chief Executive Officer, subject to regulatory approvals. Walsh, currently Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), will assume the role by August 3, 2026, following the conclusion of his tenure at IATA on July 31, 2026.

Walsh, widely known as Willie, brings decades of global aviation leadership experience. He has previously served as Chief Executive Officer of British Airways and International Airlines Group (IAG), and has held leadership roles at Aer Lingus.

Welcoming the appointment, Vikram Singh Mehta, Chairman of IndiGo, said Walsh’s extensive experience in managing large-scale airline operations and navigating complex global markets makes him ideally suited to lead IndiGo into its next phase of growth. He added that the appointment marks a new chapter for the airline as it continues to expand in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.

Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo, described Walsh as an accomplished aviation leader with a strong global perspective and deep operational expertise. He noted that Walsh’s leadership will be instrumental as IndiGo enters a new phase of transformation and growth.

Walsh is regarded as one of the most influential leaders in modern aviation, with a career spanning roles as pilot, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer at Aer Lingus (2000–2005), CEO of British Airways (2005–2011), CEO of IAG (2011–2020), and Director General of IATA since 2020.

In his new role, Walsh will oversee the airline’s overall management and strategic direction, with a focus on strengthening operational performance, advancing network and commercial strategy, and enhancing customer experience. He will work closely with the Board and leadership team to support IndiGo’s next phase of expansion.

Commenting on his appointment, Walsh said he was delighted to lead IndiGo, highlighting the airline’s strong foundation, clear vision and reputation. He emphasized the importance of its people and expressed confidence in IndiGo’s ability to remain at the forefront of a rapidly evolving aviation landscape.
