Indian Monsoon Style Guide for Men

Article is contributed by Manoj Jain, Director, Harbour 9

As the clouds have begun looming more frequently and the rains are lashing, it is time for you to overhaul your wardrobe with essentials that are ideal for the monsoon season. We often mistake to match the gloomy season and give in to dark shades to mask the unforeseen water patches on our apparel. However, you will miss out on standing out in your visual appeal, and rather the gloomy season is the best time to wear those light hues. There’s much more that you can experiment with during these months of rain. Here’s a style guide to keep your monsoon¬ appearance damp-free and visually appealing.

  • Stick to Cottons & Linens

The most versatile fabrics that are ideal for any season are Cotton and Linens. A solid-colored cotton shirt has been timelessly fascinating and never loosens its grip even in the times of modern contemporary fashion. Easy to wash and sooner to dry you can vouch on these fabrics be it for your top-wear or just the choice for your bottom-wear. Printed shirts never fail too so pick your style and couple them with a pair of linen casual trousers for a clean and crisp look.

  • Ditch the denim since they take longer to dry

A task during the monsoons is to do all the possible tricks to get your denim dry sooner. Given their heaviness, the water retention is pretty high, and with the humidity around in this season, it is best if you stack them at the back of the wardrobe. However, if you like wearing them, hoard more than 3 pairs of jeans so each one has ample time to dry after a wash. Avoid washing them frequently during this wet season to avoid dampness and an unpleasant odor due to uneven drying. A conditioner while washing will further arrest fiber breakage.

  • Strappy Sandals or sliders

Your sneakers and leather boots can stay on the track through the season as you don’t want them to soak in the puddles en route to your workplace/ party. Flip flops and footwear with straps on them are ideal to let your feet dry soon. Opt for suited flip-flops that pair well with both casual and formal outfits. Keep your feet as airy as possible to avert any infections or foot fungus which can be the case in wet fully covered shoes.

  • Waterproof watch

Needless to mention, you don’t want your expensive necessary gear to wear out with those rain droplets. Nowadays most watches are made to last and durable enough to resist water from wrecking their functionality. Go for a designer waterproof watch to keep you in the trend without fearing protecting it with the lightest showers.

  • Shorts for the win

Nobody likes the hem part of the pants drenched with water. It feels irritating and nauseous having no option but to wear them when outdoors. The best bet to overcome this hurdle is stepping out as much in shorts. Decent shorts made with linen can be paired ideally with a polo t-shirt for your indoor to outdoor detour.

  • Bomber jacket to stand out

A bomber jacket with polyester fabric can be a valuable addition to your wardrobe. It not only protects you from the rain as the material is water-resistant but also gives enough options to experiment with layer dressing. Go for a gun-metal or black-colored bomber jacket to have the right contrast with your pastel-colored shirt/ t-shirt.
