Tourism India Alliance launched in New Delhi

Aiming to integrate a significant portion of Indian travel agents operating within the unorganized sector into the mainstream fold, a group of seasoned industry professionals have united to establish the Tourism India Alliance (TIA).

The launch of this ‘not-for-profit’ organization was announced during an event held in New Delhi on Wednesday (August 16). While estimates place the count of travel agents in the country between 300,000 to 500,000, merely around 14,221 travel agents or tour operators are affiliated with any travel trade association or registered under the Ministry of Tourism.

Jagdeep Bhagat, one of TIA’s Founding members shared, “The widespread presence of unaffiliated travel agents across the nation highlights the need to connect this significant vertical with organized business entities. The absence of representation for travel agents in the unorganized sector often distorts the vertical’s true scale, especially in dealings with government bodies. Many of these agents contribute substantially to the industry’s revenue, yet they lack the recognition, importance, and technical expertise required for further growth.”

Anticipating a membership of 1,000 within the next six months, the association has already partnered with a technology firm to establish an online platform that will facilitate outreach to over 300 cities across the country. Additionally, in-person training and educational programs will be conducted to enhance the skill sets of travel agents.

Subhash Goyal, Chairman of STIC Travel Group, endorsed TIA, stating, “I am pleased that a platform has emerged solely dedicated to advancing the tourism industry, devoid of personal agendas. India’s tourism sector holds immense potential, and this representation for previously ‘unrepresented’ travel agents is poised to significantly foster its growth.”

The organization is presently strategizing the structure of membership fees, designed to attract committed players seeking knowledge and advancement. Bhagat further explained, “Obtaining a GST number is the requirement for travel agencies to join TIA, with no stipulated minimum turnover. Furthermore, other stakeholders in the industry can also participate in our association.
