Sustainable tourism key for Spain going forward

The Tourism Department of The Embassy of Spain in India organised for the first time a E-Press Meet for the India market on April 20, 2021.

Elisa Robles Fraga, Director – Tourism Office of Spain in Mumbai, made a presentation of the relevant aspects that Spain has to offer to its potential tourists with top 10 reasons (from amongst several reasons) to travel to Spain once borders open up.

Spain is actively working to be prepared for the future opening of post-pandemic borders: protocols and guidelines on health and safety aspects, website on information on all measures for visitors (Travel Safe); and the recent launching of the website “Reactivatur” to facilitate aid to the Spanish tourism sector, as well as the preparation of a Sustainable Tourism Strategy, 2020-2030.

Spain in expecting vaccination passports and certifications would be key in revitalising tourism in the country.

Spain is working with the main tourism markets in preparing destinations for the return of tourism to Spain this summer. The digital green certificate is due to be operational by June. The QR code will certify that the holder has received a vaccine or has recovered from the virus or has recently had a negative test result (or a combination of these).

According to Fraga, short haul and domestic markets will be key for destinations going ahead. She said she expects more Indian movie shoots are done in Spain going forward. Spain gained immense popularity in India after the Bollywood movie ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ was shot there.

“Few production houses have shown interest to shoot movies in Spain but the pandemic has resulted in postponing of such plans,” said Fraga.

With endless cultural festivals, beautiful beaches and amazing nightlife, Spain is awe-inspiring round-the-year. From Madrid to Barcelona to Seville to Valencia, Spain is such a vibrant country with a kick of life. 

The climate in Spain is the most reliable with over 300 sunny days per year. The versatile landscapes can pass as many locations in less than two hours, you can go from snow-capped mountains to sunny beaches, from deserts to mountainous landscapes, from XXI to XV century.

Spain is among top three worldwide destination for tourist arrivals, in the year 2019 Spain received 83 million visitors and from India the destination welcomed 210,000 travellers. 

“As we all know year 2020 was a challenging year for all destinations, however, Spain is confident that post pandemic, we will regain the lost ground. We are initiating sustainable tourism strategy and also alongside currently in the process of undertaking various promotional steps, including social media initiatives, trade activations and various other promotions so that once international travel reignites, Spain is once again ready to welcome tourists,” noted a press release issued on the behalf of the tourism board.
