Beyond Borders: Through the OTOAI Convention and the Undiscovered Allure of Moscow

Some trips are just work trips, while others leave a mark that is engraved in your memories forever. The OTOAI 6th Annual Convention held in Moscow this July was not just an industry gathering, it was a vibrant canvas painted with knowledge-sharing, cultural immersion, unforgettable experiences, and a renewed sense of global camaraderie. As someone who has attended many such industry events, I walked into this one expecting structure and meetings. What I experienced was something far deeper: a glimpse into a destination that felt both fresh and familiar, thanks to the impeccable collaboration between the Outbound Tour Operators Association of India (OTOAI) and the Moscow City Tourism Committee.

Moscow as a city has always fascinated me. Despite of visiting many times before, it still looks inviting and new. It has lot to offer and experience for Indian travellers, but I guess it was overlooked. But now with this convention, attended by 200 delegates, it is expected to get what it truly deserve, NO 1 holiday destination to go for from India.

This story is not just about an event, it’s about a destination waiting to be reimagined by Indian travellers, the incredible vision of OTOAI, and the warmth extended by our Russian counterparts who opened their hearts and their homeland to us.

Setting the Stage: Why This Convention Was Different

Held from July 10 to 13, 2025, the convention took place at the luxurious The Carlton Hotel, nestled in the heart of Moscow. It brought together over 200 Indian delegates, tour operators, media professionals, tourism leaders, and DMCs, each united by a common goal: to explore, connect, and co-create a new era of Indo-Russian tourism.

From the moment I stepped into the grand halls of The Carlton, I was struck by the sense of purpose and energy. Every detail—from registration to networking sessions—was meticulously planned. The OTOAI team, led by President Himanshu Patil and Convention Chairman Shravan Bhalla, ensured that every delegate was not just a participant, but an integral part of the larger mission to shape the future of travel. Not to miss Monia Kapoor, Joint Secretary, who was responsible for the group all media delegates and ensured every question is answered and every care was done to us.

The theme, “Fast Forward Future – The Intelligent Travel,” could not have been more relevant. In an age where travel is as much about technology and safety as it is about leisure, this theme drove powerful conversations on AI integration, customer personalisation, experiential travel, digital processes, and sustainability.

Power-Packed Sessions That Went Beyond the Ordinary

Day one began with a compelling opening ceremony featuring welcome addresses by OTOAI leadership and Evgeny Kozlov, First Deputy Head of the Office of the Mayor and the Government of Moscow, Chairman of the Moscow City Tourism Committee. Kozlov’s speech was a powerful reminder of how tourism can be a diplomatic bridge between nations.

The sessions that followed were thought-provoking and timely. A standout was the panel discussion on “Connected Travel”. The panellists, each a stalwart in their domain, discussed the evolution of travel expectations, safety concerns, and the future of cross-border tourism. The panel had incredible names from the industry including Dev Karvat – Founder & CEO, Asego, Irshad Dadan. Director, One Above, Rahim Aslam, Visionary Founder, One Above Global DMC and others.

Keynote sessions by Dr. Prashant Pansare and Deven Parulekar added rich insights into future-focused business models and transformative trends. From AI-powered itinerary planning to the rise of destination weddings and micro-holidays, every topic opened our eyes to how the Indian traveller is evolving—and how Moscow fits perfectly into this narrative.

The signing of an MOU between VFS Global and OTOAI further cemented the intent to strengthen structural cooperation. And it wasn’t just talk, over 1,750 B2B meetings took place during the convention, yielding tangible outcomes including partnerships, package creations, and volume commitments for upcoming seasons.

Moscow Unveiled: A City That Captivated Us All

While the sessions fed our minds, Moscow fed our souls.

The Moscow City Tourism Committee curated an exceptional familiarization experience that went far beyond the typical tourist trails. From the grandeur of Red Square and the charm of GUM shopping center to the innovative beauty of Zaryadye Park and the futuristic VDNH complex—each stop was a revelation.

But what truly stood out was how Moscow managed to be historical and modern, vibrant and serene, all at once. A river cruise gave us an ethereal view of the skyline, while walking tours introduced us to hidden gems, fascinating metro stations, and local stories that tourists often miss.

The cultural highlights were unforgettable. We witnessed a thrilling horse show that showcased Russian traditions, enjoyed a panoramic ride on the “Sun of Moscow” Ferris Wheel, and relished diverse culinary experiences that went beyond borscht and caviar.

And then there was the ‘Festival of India—Bharat Utsav, held at Manezhnaya Square. A soul-stirring celebration of Indo-Russian friendship, the event merged Indian dance, music, and handicrafts with local enthusiasm. Watching locals groove to Bollywood music under the open sky of Moscow was surreal and deeply moving. It wasn’t just an event; it was cultural diplomacy at its finest.

A Standing Ovation for the Organizers

It would be impossible to talk about the convention without appreciating the extraordinary effort and vision of the OTOAI team. Behind every itinerary, every minute of the day, was a clear focus: to deliver value to delegates and forge real, meaningful connections between the Indian and Russian tourism ecosystems.

Equally commendable was the Moscow City Tourism Committee. Their dedication was evident in the seamless logistics, the passionate storytelling, and the genuine effort to understand Indian travel preferences. Their team didn’t just host us; they welcomed us like long-lost friends. Their enthusiasm was contagious, and their professionalism, inspiring.

Why Moscow Should Be on Every Indian Travellers Radar

Moscow is not just a city, it’s a layered story waiting to be explored. It offers the perfect blend of cultural richness, architectural marvels, modern amenities, and immersive experiences. Whether you’re a history buff, a romantic soul, a luxury seeker, or a family traveller, Moscow has something for everyone.

Must-visit landmarks include:

• The Kremlin and Red Square: Heart of Russian history and politics.

• Bolshoi Theatre: For lovers of ballet and classic performances.

• Moscow Metro: A moving museum with intricately designed stations.

• Arbat Street: A walk through art, culture, and street performances.

• Gorky Park: A serene escape right in the city center.

• VDNH: A sprawling open-air museum of Soviet grandeur with modern refreshing experience and infrastructure

• The Moscow cable car: A unique route across Moskva River with a stunning view

Add to this the direct air connectivity through Aeroflot, improved visa processes, and growing Indian-friendly services, and you have a destination that is ready and waiting.

A St. Petersburg Sojourn: The Grand Finale

After Moscow, we moved to the breathtaking city of St. Petersburg, Russia’s cultural capital and architectural masterpiece. The post-convention tour was like a cherry on top.

Our journey began with a guided tour of Palace Square, where baroque architecture whispered stories of emperors and revolutions. A river and canal cruise showed us a more romantic, reflective side of the city, especially under the ethereal light of the famous White Nights.

One of the most magical moments was our early access tour to The Hermitage Palace. Walking through its regal corridors without crowds gave us a rare chance to soak in the grandeur and intricacy of one of the world’s greatest art museums.

Evenings were reserved for cocktails, networking, and cultural performances that brought both Indian and Russian traditions together. The synergy was beautiful, and the vibe—unforgettable.

The Takeaway: A Convention That Was More Than Just Business

The OTOAI 6th Convention wasn’t just a meeting of minds; it was a meeting of hearts, cultures, and aspirations. It created not only business leads but also lifelong memories. More importantly, it proved that Moscow and St. Petersburg are not just destinations—they are experiences.

For Indian outbound tourism, Russia offers a compelling alternative to traditional European getaways. It’s unique, accessible, and welcoming, with a rich past and a promising future. The seeds sown during this convention will bloom into collaborative itineraries, robust packages, and a more diversified travel landscape for Indian tourists.

The partnership between OTOAI and the Moscow City Tourism Committee is a testament to what’s possible when vision meets commitment. And as delegates flew back home, one thing was certain: this wasn’t the end. It was a powerful beginning.

Because sometimes, in the most unexpected places, we find not just inspiration—but a new perspective. And in Moscow, I found both.
