Sustainability takes centerstage as Indian travel industry celebrates World Tourism Day 2023

As India’s tourism and hospitality industry celebrates World Tourism Day 2023 on September 27, sustainability has emerged as a central focus for the sector. The theme for this year’s World Tourism Day underscores a pivotal milestone in aligning with the United Nations General Assembly’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its associated goals. With the Travel and Tourism market poised to generate a staggering estimated revenue of US$854.70 billion in 2023, there is boundless promise for growth in developing nations.

Shikhar Aggarwal, Joint Managing Director of BLS International Services, emphasized the importance of embracing eco-conscious initiatives among local tour operators. He stated, “These visionary entrepreneurs hold the keys to unlocking a sustainable future where technology-driven solutions propel us towards a green tourism ethos that is accessible and enjoyable for all.”

World Tourism Day, a global observance, highlights the crucial role of tourism in fostering cultural exchange, economic growth, and international cooperation. This year’s theme, “Tourism and Green Investments,” encourages dialogue on the imperative of sustainable tourism.

Samir MC, Managing Director of Fortune Hotels, recognized tourism’s multifaceted significance, not only as a bridge between cultures but also as a key driver of economic development. He stressed the industry’s responsibility to conserve the natural and cultural treasures that make India an incredible travel destination.

As we celebrate World Tourism Day,” he added, “we must recognize our collective responsibility to reduce our ecological footprint and create a green future that positively impacts our community. Tourism’s future is bright as we all strive for a more responsible and well-grounded ecosystem.”

Jose Ramapuram, Director of Marketing at Evolve Back Resorts, shared the resort’s commitment to eco-conscious practices and preserving the natural beauty of travel destinations. He outlined their tangible efforts, including expanding green energy production through windmills and solar plants, investing in renewable energy sources, and undertaking resource management projects like rainwater harvesting and waste management.
