The Consulate General of Israel in Mumbai commemorated Israel’s 76th Independence Day with a gala event that underscored the strong ties between Israel and India.
Held at St. Regis Hotel on August 2, the celebration brought together prominent figures from politics, business, the Indian film industry and civil society, highlighting the depth and breadth of the Israel-India relationship.
Key attendees included Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, former MP Subramanian Swamy, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar and Additional Chief Secretary Manisha Patankar Mhaskar. They were joined by Israeli Ambassador to India Naor Gilon and Consul General Kobbi Shoshani.
During the evening, hosted by Vinod Advani, the Consulate reflected on Israel’s journey since its independence. From its humble beginnings, the country transformed into a global leader in agriculture and technology. This progress, the consulate expressed, mirrors India’s remarkable development, forming a basis for the two nations’ mutual understanding and collaboration.
The celebration also marked the conclusion of Ambassador Naor Gilon’s successful three- year tenure in India. A comprehensive video by the consulate showcased the new achievements unlocked with strong Israel-India relations, under his leadership, encompassing areas from defence and agriculture to tourism and cultural exchange. “I have served in so many countries, but no country shows such a love for us like India does. Similarly, Israelis love India equally. During my tenure of only three years I could see the country growing. A part of my heart will always be here in India,” stated Ambassador Gilon.
Ahead of the state election, the dignitaries speaking on the occasion, including Deputy CM Fadnavis, expressed appreciation for India’s long standing friendship, noting the unique historical bond between the people of both countries. Their presence and support symbolised stronger ties with the nation. “India and Israel have rich history and are now modern civilisation and both have not forgotten their roots. Israel’s story of progress is truly motivating and, in the years, to come both the countries’ relations will grow,” he said.
As Consul General Kobbi Shoshani concluded a momentous evening for Israel, he stated, “We are a younger brother of India and I want to thank India for the way Jews have been treated here. We were a very poor country at the time of independence but today we excel in industries and agriculture and lead in innovation.”
The Israel Ministry of Tourism (IMOT) views this as a milestone, forging an opportunity to invite more Indian travellers to experience Israel’s diverse attractions. With direct flights and a range of activities – from historical sites and adventure to sustainability and technology hubs – Israel offers Indian visitors a blend of the ancient and the modern.
